Protect your garden from snails and slugs

How to get rid of snails and slugs in the garden: control methods, pitfalls and predators .

Slugs and snails.
A difference should be made between the two as the Burgundy snail is a protected species, and in addition, it eats eggs ... On the other hand, there are slugs. When you wake up one morning to find your flowers or rows of salads completely ransacked by gastropods, you don´t really feel like differentiating: you just want it to stop!
Our allies . If you want to avoid using poison, they can be effectively trapped and predators can be encouraged. Birds, hedgehogs, toads and many animals have a liking for snails. This is the case of slow worms or insects such as beetles. Put hese valuable allies to good use! Leave a few branches and leaves in a corner of the garden for the hedgehog family to hibernate. A large Roman tile near the tap or in a cool place will make a toad house. Also keep hedges where insects and birds take refuge for nesting and keep an eye out for that pesky salad eating snail.
Traps. You can use a big tile to attract slugs in search of lodgings. Turn it over when the sun has dried the earth and the birds will thank you. You can also use beer traps. Protected from rain, they are very effective for slugs and will not be used as a drinking trough by hedgehogs as beer makes them sick.
Ramparts . Surround plants with sawdust and ashes to prevent snails and slugs passing through. Mulching also offers good protection. Snails and slugs move slowly and prefer to avoid these unfavourable terrains. There are also chemical ramparts. If you use Bordeaux Mixture, spray a diluted solution between the rows you want to protect. Molluscs hate copper sulphate and it kills them in high doses.

The largest vole, sometimes called ""taupier rat"" can also wreak havoc in the garden. It burrows and eats its own weight in roots every day... Mind your beans!
