Protect your garden from rodents

How to remove voles and other harmful rodents. Control methods, pitfalls and predators .

Rodents
Taupiers rats, voles and mice can cause considerable damage to a garden
A vole eats the equivalent of its own weight in roots every day! It loves fleshy vegetables with a slight preference for pulses. Needless to say, your bean row does not scare it away.
Cats. With very few exceptions, cats today are too well fed. They are too comfortable in our homes to spend nights hunting mice in the field. It´s too bad. The cat is the perfect predator but when it is exhausted from lying on its cushion, it will fall asleep and the mice will play ....
Try plants. Less fond of croquettes, they guard their little patch of land day and night and can deter rodents with their scent or their roots. Euphorbia plant or the imperial crown.
Inconvenience. If the mice have arrived in droves, repellent plants will probably not suffice. A fairly radical solution is to stink out and drown their galleries with very macerated sewage plant! Elderberry liquid manure smells terrible and will give the best results.
Traps . Are your field mice, voles and taupier rats cold? Do they love the smell of manure and continue to decimate your vegetables? Capture them!
Use mouse traps or cages that you bait with some cat kibble or a piece of apple (Jealous of seeing his kibble distributed to others, your cat might feel like getting closer to these new competitors). Place your traps at the entrance to the gallery and cover them with a flower pot or bucket. They will be protected from rain. The advantage of this kind of trap is that they do not kill. You can release the rodents somewhere away from your garden. You can also use mole traps. Voles will not think twice about using mole tunnels if it will get them to the roots.
And what about owls? Build them a nice perch. Owls hunt at night in small gardens and will be on the lookout. If you offer a nice vantage point, they will monitor the activity of rodents ...
