Protect your garden from birds

How to protect your cherries and other fruit from birds and hold them off? Scarecrows, nets and kites are all means to combat birds effectively.

Birds.
We love them. Nothing is more pleasant than a garden full of birds chirping. We feed them, make them small shelters, but when the fruit begins to ripen, we will do anything to chase them away. Who has not felt a murderous craving on seeing his or her cherries pecked and ransacked by these insatiable flying pests?
Scarecrows . To protect effectively, we only have two strategies: prevent the birds´ access with nets or scare them. Scarecrows, cats faces and other disturbing objects are effective but the birds get used to them soon enough. Your fruit is so appetising that birds that are generally fearful will be ready to brave any danger for a treat. Do not relent. Move your scarecrows around regularly...
Kites. Especially effective to protect your seedlings or your fruit, kites sail upwards with the least breeze. Their constant motion simulates the flight of a bird of prey and makes a disturbing noise. They can be easily installed at the end of a flexible boom and even without wind they still have a deterrent action.
Nets. It is very east to protect shrubs. Cover them completely. For large trees, the installation is a bit more difficult, but even if it is not fully protected by the net, this solution remains by far the safest. Be careful though not to ""trap"" birds by making pockets. They eat many larvae that may proliferate.
Canons. Another form of deterrent is the air gun. The detonations are so good at scaring that one shot and our winged friends prefer to keep away. (Avoid doing this under the window of your neighbour if he is naturally grumpy.)
Traps. Sometimes the balance between species is broken and you are invaded by crows, magpies and rooks, for example. If there is proven invasion, do not hesitate to contact licensed hunters or trappers. Net traps are used to capture live callers and then they are placed in traps to attract magpies and other birds.

The largest vole, sometimes called ""taupier rat"" can also wreak havoc in the garden. It burrows and eats its own weight in roots every day... Mind your beans!
