The little story of the barbecue

Very popular cooking appliance. Do you know how this cooking method came into our daily lives?

It comes out on sunny days, it makes you want to invite friends, it is popular, friendly, sometimes ingenious and is a real way of life all by itself.
You guessed it's the barbecue !   


Origin of the barbecue

According to some historical studies, it was in the fifteenth century and it was among the Taïnos, an unknown people living in the Caribbean, that the Spanish Conquistadors discovered this method of cooking. It is said that this tribe was peaceful, which is safer, it is that she shared her knowledge.  

These Tainos spoke arawak, and in Arawack, "barbacoa" indicates that the cooking mode is done on a grid. The game and the prepared food were placed on a wooden rack and the whole was suspended over a fire. Food was thus protected from land animals by height and insects by smoke. By this way these primitive populations had also discovered a mode of conservation ...   


Its European success

Like all wealth, the Spanish settlers are not long in importing this method and it is at the beginning of the sixteenth century that it develops strongly in Europe especially for the organization of banquets.  

Over the centuries, this method, thanks to its success, becomes popular and it is other settlers who will plebiscite and transform it into success. From the east of the United States of America, large numbers of migrants took this kitchen so simple and practical to implement during the conquest of the west. In Europe, confined to local festivals, the barbecue will take its time to develop.   


Its return to Europe

Become an essential element of the "American way of life", the barbecue will cross again the Atlantic Ocean, after the second world war to seduce the Europeans through the television, the seventh art and advertising. The arrival on the market of small charcoal barbecues has the effect of promoting the development of the barbecue as we know it today. If the latter remains the ultimate in purists, in recent years, barbecues have modernized with the development of gas appliances, electric and Kamado inspiration. With these techniques, food cooking remains almost identical but the ignition, maintenance and safety constraints have been removed.  

Finally, this ancestral technique has not changed too much over the years. It remains especially and this is the essential, synonymous with conviviality and lifestyle.
