Manufacture of corks for wine

How do cork stopper producers make a good quality product that can keep wines for many years?  

Cork is used to make corks for the corking bottles of wine , but also champagne, for bottles of cognac, for to close the vinegar makers in sandstone or to mount the stoppers of vinegar, to close the bottles, the jars ...  

The stages of manufacture of corks.  

After being harvested from the cork oak and dried, the cork undergoes several treatments, including soaking in boiling water to purify, moisten and soften it.  

The cork bark is then cut into strips whose width defines the length of the future plugs.  

These strips of cork then pass into expert hands that will perforate the cork with a punch of the diameter of the desired plugs. The diameter is always the same for wine bottles and it is more important for champagne corks.
The know-how of the workers at this stage is crucial because you have to master the machine to have a good work pace, but also a seasoned eye to identify imperfections and cut the corks by optimizing the cork bark strip. The falls are then used either to make smaller plugs for other uses (broilers, pouring plugs for oil ...), or reduced to powder to seal the plugs of lower quality.  

The cork stopper is then ground to be very uniform and plan, then it is sorted several times, by machines and also by workers, more and more fine way to analyze it from every angle and classify it in one of 9 different categories, according to its appearance, its surface and its properties for the corking and the conservation of the wine in the time.
